STERI STUMPIE CHOCOLATE MALVA PUDDING
This South African Dessert Recipe Serves 7-10
Steri Stumpie Chocolate Malva Pudding is a must try. This decadent South African dessert is so delicious & is even more satisfying if you’re a chocolate lover.
Malva pudding is a South African sweet pudding which originated from the Cape Dutch. It contains apricot jam & is traditionally made without chocolate being included. A cream sauce is regularly poured over it while it is hot, & it is served hot with custard &/or ice cream or fresh cream.
This twist of flavour uses Steri Stumpie chocolate flavoured milk to create a blissful, comforting & chocolaty dessert.
Steri Stumpie Chocolate Malva Pudding Ingredients:
The Batter:
- 350 ml Steri Stumpie Chocolate Flavoured Milk
- 6 tablespoons butter, room temperature
- 1 ½ tablespoons apricot jam
- 1 cup (250 ml) granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon white spirit vinegar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
- ½ teaspoon instant coffee
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ teaspoons cocoa powder
The Sauce:
- 250 ml (1 cup) Steri Stumpie Chocolate Flavoured Milk
- 4 tablespoons butter, room temperature
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon instant coffee
- 2 teaspoons vanilla essence
Method for the Batter:
- Firstly, preheat the oven to 180° Celsius or 356° Fahrenheit.
- Grease a deep baking tin with butter or spraying oil & set aside.
- Place a pot or saucepan on the stove-top on medium-high heat. Shake the Steri Stumpie Chocolate Flavoured Milk & pour into the pot/saucepan.
- Add in 2 tablespoons of butter.
- Thereafter, add in the apricot jam.
- Stir until the jam & butter are melted.
- There should be a few specks of butter left behind, but that’s completely fine. Remove this mixture from the heat, add in the white vinegar, stir & set aside.
- Add the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter to a mixing bowl.
- To that, add the granulated sugar. I have used brown granulated sugar in this recipe but white granulated sugar may be used as well.
- Mix well until combined.
- Add in the eggs.
- Mix well.
- Next, add in the salt, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder, cocoa powder & the instant coffee.
- Add in the all-purpose flour.
- Mix until well combined.
- Remember the mixture we put together on the stove-top at the beginning? Pour that mixture into the mixing bowl.
- Mix well. It should look like a cake batter.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking tin.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes at 180° Celsius or 356° Fahrenheit.
- Whilst the batter is baking, get started on the sauce. Note: It’s best to start the sauce 20 minutes into baking, that way the sauce will still be hot.
- Method for the Sauce:
- Place a pot or saucepan on the stove-top on medium-high heat. Shake the Steri Stumpie Chocolate Flavoured Milk & pour into the pot/saucepan.
- Add in the 4 tablespoons of butter.
- Add in the granulated sugar.
- Next, add in the instant coffee & pour in the vanilla essence.
- Mix well.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring as needed. Boil for 5 minutes. Keep an eye on it as it can over flow if left unattended. Once it’s done boiling, remove from heat & set aside.
- After 35 minutes, the Steri Stumpie Chocolate Malva Pudding should be baked.
- Insert a skewer or knife, if it comes out clean then it is ready, if not then stick it back into the oven for 5 minutes more or until cooked.
- Using a knife, poke holes into the pudding. Thereafter, pour the hot sauce over it.
- Allow it to rest in the turned off oven for 10-15 minutes. The heat will ensure that the sauce soaks through the baked pudding, leaving it moist & sticky.
- After 10-15 minutes, remove the Steri Stumpie Chocolate Malva Pudding from the turned off oven.
- Notice how the sauce has absorbed into the pudding.
- Slice into pieces.
- Serve either hot or cold, although hot is much better.
- This Steri Stumpie Chocolate Malva Pudding goes well with ice cream, custard or fresh cream
- Store them in an airtight container, in the refrigerator for up to a week. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
- The inside of the malva pudding should be moist.
