STERI STUMPIE CHOCOLATE MALVA PUDDING

This South African Dessert Recipe Serves 7-10

Steri Stumpie Chocolate Malva Pudding is a must try. This decadent South African dessert is so delicious & is even more satisfying if you’re a chocolate lover.

Malva pudding is a South African sweet pudding which originated from the Cape Dutch. It contains apricot jam & is traditionally made without chocolate being included. A cream sauce is regularly poured over it while it is hot, & it is served hot with custard &/or ice cream or fresh cream.

This twist of flavour uses Steri Stumpie chocolate flavoured milk to create a blissful, comforting & chocolaty dessert.

Steri Stumpie Chocolate Malva Pudding Ingredients:

The Batter:

  • 350 ml Steri Stumpie Chocolate Flavoured Milk
  • 6 tablespoons butter, room temperature
  • 1 ½ tablespoons apricot jam
  • 1 cup (250 ml) granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon white spirit vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • ½ teaspoon instant coffee
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ teaspoons cocoa powder

The Sauce:

  • 250 ml (1 cup) Steri Stumpie Chocolate Flavoured Milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter, room temperature
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon instant coffee
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla essence

Method for the Batter:

  1. Firstly, preheat the oven to 180° Celsius or 356° Fahrenheit.
  2. Grease a deep baking tin with butter or spraying oil & set aside.
  3. Steri Stumpie Chocolate Malva Pudding
  4. Place a pot or saucepan on the stove-top on medium-high heat. Shake the Steri Stumpie Chocolate Flavoured Milk & pour into the pot/saucepan.
  5. Add in 2 tablespoons of butter.
  6. Thereafter, add in the apricot jam.
  7. Stir until the jam & butter are melted.
  8. There should be a few specks of butter left behind, but that’s completely fine. Remove this mixture from the heat, add in the white vinegar, stir & set aside.
  9. Add the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter to a mixing bowl.
  10. To that, add the granulated sugar. I have used brown granulated sugar in this recipe but white granulated sugar may be used as well.
  11. Mix well until combined.
  12. Add in the eggs.
  13. Mix well.
  14. Next, add in the salt, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder, cocoa powder & the instant coffee.
  15. Add in the all-purpose flour.
  16. Mix until well combined.
  17. Remember the mixture we put together on the stove-top at the beginning? Pour that mixture into the mixing bowl.
  18. Mix well. It should look like a cake batter.
  19. Pour the batter into the prepared baking tin.
  20. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes at 180° Celsius or 356° Fahrenheit.
  21. Whilst the batter is baking, get started on the sauce. Note: It’s best to start the sauce 20 minutes into baking, that way the sauce will still be hot.
  22. Method for the Sauce:
  23. Place a pot or saucepan on the stove-top on medium-high heat. Shake the Steri Stumpie Chocolate Flavoured Milk & pour into the pot/saucepan.
  24. Add in the 4 tablespoons of butter.
  25. Add in the granulated sugar.
  26. Next, add in the instant coffee & pour in the vanilla essence.
  27. Mix well.
  28. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring as needed. Boil for 5 minutes. Keep an eye on it as it can over flow if left unattended. Once it’s done boiling, remove from heat & set aside.
  29. After 35 minutes, the Steri Stumpie Chocolate Malva Pudding should be baked.
  30. Insert a skewer or knife, if it comes out clean then it is ready, if not then stick it back into the oven for 5 minutes more or until cooked.
  31. Using a knife, poke holes into the pudding. Thereafter, pour the hot sauce over it.
  32. Allow it to rest in the turned off oven for 10-15 minutes. The heat will ensure that the sauce soaks through the baked pudding, leaving it moist & sticky.
  33. After 10-15 minutes, remove the Steri Stumpie Chocolate Malva Pudding from the turned off oven.
  34. Notice how the sauce has absorbed into the pudding.
  35. Slice into pieces.
  36. Serve either hot or cold, although hot is much better.
  37. This Steri Stumpie Chocolate Malva Pudding goes well with ice cream, custard or fresh cream
  38. Store them in an airtight container, in the refrigerator for up to a week. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
  39. The inside of the malva pudding should be moist.
