KLIM ROTI

This Indian Recipe Makes ± 16 Rotis

This Klim Roti recipe is a flop proof recipe.

Klim Roti is an alternative version of the simple roti. Klim is actually a name brand of milk powder which is found in South Africa. Any other milk powder may be used as well.

Using milk powder in the mixture helps prepare extra soft rotis with a great taste.

Roti (otherwise called handmade bread or chapati) is a level bread which originated in India. This bread is widely recognized throughout many parts of the world. It is also common in South Africa.

This bread is often served with curries, chicken tikka & many more tantalizing dishes.

In South Africa, apart from serving roti with meals, it has also been enjoyed with a spread of butter or jam.

Pronunciation: Roh-tee, Cha-pa-tee

Klim Roti Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup of oil (I used sunflower oil)
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • ± 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 ½ teaspoons of salt
  • 4 tablespoons Klim milk powder (or any other brand of milk powder)

Method:

  1. Add the flour & salt into a large bowl.
  2. Klim Roti
  3. Next, add in the Klim milk powder.
  4. Add in the oil.
  5. Mix well.
  6. Thereafter, add in the boiling water. Stir using a spoon.
  7. Allow for the mixture to cool down a bit.
  8. Use your hands & begin mixing it to feel the consistency. If it is too weak or sticky, add more flour. If it is too dry then add in a bit more boiling water. Knead the dough on a floured surface.
  9. It should make a soft pliable dough.
  10. Begin dividing the dough into small balls & set aside. You should get about 16 balls of dough.
  11. Next, get out a wide enough container & line it with a sheet of wax paper.
  12. Go back to the balls of dough. Work with each piece individually. Roll the piece of dough in the palm of your hands so that it forms a nice ball.
  13. Dip the ball into some flour & place on a floured surface. Press the ball flat with the palm of your hand.
  14. Begin rolling out each ball into a wide circular shape. You can also roll it out & then use a plate to cut out your circular shape.
  15. Place rolled out roti’s (one at a time) on a pan, tava, skillet or electric pan – making sure that it is hot enough first. Toast on medium to high heat. It should start forming bubbles.
  16. Don’t allow it to burn, rather flip it over after 30 seconds & toast the other side. You can always flip them over again & toast properly if one side hasn’t been fully toasted.
  17. Do not add any butter or ghee over it whilst toasting. This tends to make the roti’s harden.
  18. When roti’s are toasted on both sides, remove & place in the container lined with wax paper.
  19. Cover the container with a dish towel to seal in the moisture.
  20. Make sure to keep flipping the rotis in the container to avoid soggy rotis as the steam may dampen them.
  21. Best served hot. These Klim Roti’s can be reheated in the microwave.
  22. This Klim Roti is best served with Chicken Curry, Mutton Curry, Vegetable Curries including Sugar Beans Curry & Chicken Tikka.
