Spur Style Onion Rings are popular in South Africa. Spurs onion rings are actually French Fried Onions which are a type of hors d’oeuvre (appetizers) or side dish. If you are an onion lover then these will hit the right spot!

These are lightcrispy with plenty of onion flavor. The trick is to slice the onions as thin as possible & fry them until they are golden but not burnt. They work great over casseroles, ground to crumbs as an ingredient, or as snacks!

Spur Style Onion Rings Ingredients:

Method:

  1. Place the large onion on a cutting board.
  2. Cut the ends of the onion, remove & discard the peel.
  3. In the same direction that you cut of the ends of the onions (If the ends are at North & South positions, then slice horizontally. If the ends are at East & West positions, then slice vertically), slice sections as thin as possible. I have used a slicer to maintain the thinnest slices of the onion, so if you have one, be sure to use it.
  4. This will form clusters of strings or rings. In order to get those stringy French-fried onions, make a slit on the rings of the sliced onions.
  5. Next, place the thinly sliced onions into a flat casserole.
  6. At this point, separate them & lay them evenly in the casserole.
  7. Pour the fresh milk over the onions & allow the onion slices to soak in the milk for an hour.
  8. Cover the casserole with cling/plastic wrap & refrigerate.
  9. When an hour has passed, pour the cooking oil in a small pot, filling it enough for deep frying. Allow the oil to heat on medium temperature.
  10. Add in the flour, salt, chili powder or Paprika & the onion powder into a large bowl & mix well. (The onion powder gives that kick of onion taste when it is fried & it is absolutely delicious. The original onion taste withers away due it being soaked in the milk so using the onion powder is a big yes if you’re looking for flavour).
  11. When the oil is sizzling, gently take a batch at a time of the onion slices, directly from the milk & place in the bowl of flour. Coat the onion slices well.
  12. Thereafter, place the coated onion slices into the sizzling oil. Do not over crowd the pot.
  13. Fry for about 3 minutes until golden brown, remove & drain off the excess oil on a paper towel. At this point it is best to sprinkle a bit of salt over according to taste.
  14. As you can see from the image above, one large onion made quite a lot of Spur Style Onion Rings, enough to serve many.
  15. Serve Spur Style Onion Rings hot with a dipping sauce, as a side to any meal or as a topping on casseroles. Also goes well with Spur Style Butternut Mash.
