Make authentic Dairy-Free Milkshakes for Diwali (3 Festive Flavours!) with this foolproof recipe. Packed with rich traditional flavor, step-by-step photos, and cooking tips by Denisiya on EatMee Recipes.

Diwali is all about vibrant colours, indulgent treats, and celebrating with family and friends. However, being lactose intolerant often means missing out on the rich, creamy drinks and traditional milk-based treats served around the table. These Dairy-Free Milkshakes for Diwali solve that completely, delivering all the festive nostalgia in three signature South African flavours: Luscious Lime, Rose Elachi, and Blue Bubblegum.
Instead of store-bought alternatives packed with stabilizers, the base of these milkshakes is fresh, homemade macadamia nut milk made in minutes using the Cuisinart NutSmart Nut, Seed & Grain Milk Maker. Because the machine features a dedicated cold Nut setting, it blends raw macadamias and water without using heat, preserving the pure, buttery flavour of the nuts for the smoothest milkshake base.

100% Lactose-Free & Dairy-Free: Gentle on sensitive stomachs without sacrificing that thick, velvety milkshake texture.
Three Iconic Flavours: Features classic South African favourites…Dada’s Milky Way Luscious Lime, fragrant Rose & Elachi (cardamom), and nostalgic Blue Bubblegum.
Quick & Fuss-Free: No soaking nuts overnight or messy cheesecloth straining required.
Place your Cuisinart NutSmart Nut, Seed & Grain Milk Maker on a flat, dry countertop and assemble the inner filter basket and blade housing. Having a dedicated appliance with a built-in filtration system means you can make fresh, preservative-free nut milk at home without pre-soaking nuts or straining pulp through a messy cheesecloth.

Under the lid component is the filter basket, unlock it and remove the container – this should now expose the blades.

Add 175 grams of raw, unsalted macadamia nuts into the filter basket. I opted for macadamias for this recipe because they have one of the highest natural healthy fat contents of any nut, which means they blend into a rich, velvety milk that mimics the mouthfeel of full-cream dairy without needing any gums or thickeners. However, you can easily swap them out for other nuts, seeds, or grains like raw cashews, blanched almonds, pistachios, or rolled oats if preferred!

Lock in the filter basket.

Pour 960 ml of cold water into the stainless steel chamber.

Secure the lid and select the cold Nut setting – this blends the nuts with zero heat, preserving their pure, creamy, raw flavour.

The no heat setting is the first cup icon – you can select this using the selector button with the three lines.

You can watch the unboxing of this product to see it in detail.

Press the power button to start blending, it took under a minute to create the milk. Once the cycle is complete, open the lid and you will be shocked at how velvety and creamy this turned out.

Pour the freshly made, ultra-smooth macadamia milk into a glass jug.

Pop it into the refrigerator for 1 to 2 hours until thoroughly chilled.

The Cuisinart NutSmart automatically separates all the fine macadamia pulp for you, so there is zero messy straining through a cheesecloth required!

Don’t throw this nutritious pulp away; you can spread it on a baking tray to dry into macadamia flour, stir it into your morning oats or smoothies, or use it to make a batch of festive Diwali burfi, ladoos, or cookies.

Whilst the milk is chilling, prepare the subja seeds. Add subja seeds to a bowl and top with boiling water and allow it to swell. If too much water was added, simply strain it before adding to the drink. This is going to be used for the Rose flavoured milk but it’s completely optional.

Beat the 250 ml chilled Orley Whip in a mixing bowl or stand mixer until stiff peaks form, transfer to a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle.

Gather your three flavourings: Dada’s Milky Way Luscious Lime syrup, Dada’s Rose syrup, and Modak’s Blue Bubblegum essence.

I also got my garnishes ready – for the lime milkshake, we’re using lime zest.

For the rose milkshake, you can use either dried rose petals or glazed cherries.

For the bubblegum milkshake, we’re using these lollipops with a hint of blue.

Once the macadamia milk is chilled and you’re ready to start assembling the milkshakes, mix or blend 150-200 ml of chilled macadamia milk and 3-4 ice cubes with each flavour, adjusting it to taste and of course doing each batch separately. Starting with the blend of luscious lime and pouring it into glasses.

Then onto the rose milk…

At this point, I also added in the soaked subja seeds.

Then finally, onto the bubblegum milk – because this is an essence and not a syrup, I added sugar to taste when blending.

Again, because it’s an essence, the colour did not come through. You may leave it as is but I added some blue gel food colour to make it pop.

And into the glasses it goes…

Now it’s time to pipe a generous swirl of dairy-free cream over all three glasses.

Finish each drink with its signature festive garnish: grate fresh lime zest onto the green lime milkshake,

Sprinkle dried edible rose petals onto the pink rose elachi milkshake.

And place a colourful lollipop into the blue bubblegum milkshake.

Serve immediately and enjoy!

This vibrant trio of Luscious Lime, Rose Elachi, and Blue Bubblegum milkshakes brings so much colour to your Diwali table, proving that going dairy-free never means missing out on the festive treats!
